Rappers who are both talented and have the hype behind them are very few and far between. For real, these are the guys who have the potential to slay the industry with dope lyrical content that not only celebrates life but builds those around them at the same. FitjoSOA is one such rapper whose purpose is to inspire change around people around him.
Born and bred in KwaZulu Natal, to young parents facing the consequences of a self destructive system, Nhlakanipho Phillip Mphati knew that his purpose was greater than just making music.
He grew up in KZN, Gauteng and Limpopo and was introduced to music by his uncle at the age of 9 which sparked his passion for the art form. His influences stem from genres such as Hip Hop, Kwaito, Jazz and soul to name a few and these give him inspiration to make his style of music he calls alternatice rap. His focus is on storytelling and showing appreciation and love to his land of birth, Africa, and this is how he came to be known as “The Story Telling Son Of Africa”.
He recorded his first demo as part of a group, Absoloot, which led to them performing at venues such as Who’s Who in Midrand and entering competitions hosted by HHP. They were also profiled on popular Hip Hop magazine, Hype, back in 2009.
Fast forward to present day, Fitjo SOA is currently working on his first studio project which he began recording in 2013. He has dropped music to lead up to his project, The Closer To The Mic Project- Intro, which will drop later on this year and these songs include Give It Time, Last Round and Swipist (Tribute To Kwaito) to name a few.
His music is a seamless fusion of boom bap, RnB and jazz with a little bit of nostalgia and heaps of lyricism which should be applauded. Plus his music is such a pleasure to listen to you because of the positive messages behind it. It’s quite refreshing to be honest. If the three tracks he dropped sound this refined and dynamic, then we have no doubt that the project he is set to drop will sound like a master piece; it is 6 years in the making after all.
