Rapper, singer and songwriter, Ferlando Young, is one of the most tenacious acts from Pietermaritzburg, have you met him yet?
It takes a certain character to separate the peasants from princes and even more stature to separate the Soundcloud rappers from the leaders of the alt wave. Khwezi Ngcobo, affectionately known as Ferlando Young, is one of the most tenacious acts from the 033 (Pietermaritzburg). He’s had his intentions premised on breaking into the industry prolonging #FYSeason.

Hailed The Prince of The 3rd, a title that remains unchallenged to date, his passion for music dates back to 2005, when G-Unit was at its peak and 50 Cents enticing influence shaped Ferlando’s career aspirations. A little over a decade and endless hours of writing later, he released his first single, Rollie, via CityJamz Records.
Towards the end of Soundcloud’s prominence as one of the most accessible music distribution platforms, in 2017, Ferlando released his debut EP, Finesse. What would follow is an onslaught of music releases, namely Weekend Special EP, Cautious EP, Sleep Paralysis, DWFT (Freestyle) , All Night, My Soul To You, Lately, and Illegal Tapes Vol. 1 among others.
What caught my attention was the rollout for his current EP, Make It Out, which boasts singles such as the street anthem With It and the seductive PVT. The infectious energy that transmuted into a mission statement for his career made me scroll down his timeline and made me discover some Instagram Gems such as Morning After [Performance Video] , immaculate visuals primarily shot and directed by Im A HolicProductions (Yay.OK), and a hunger for success that is all too familiar.

A straight talker of note, Ferlando doesn’t coddle around niceties. While the honey of his truths is coated in rich melodic texture, records like Make It Outro are laced with vinegar straight talk. Narrating the hardships of his hometown, Make It Outro shares an overwhelming insight into what motivates his relentless drive and why he’s chosen to approach the industry with a Darwinian mindset of adapt or die.
The climate of Hip-Hop music has changed with technology development, most notably social media accessibility. While Kendrick would debate that the industry has killed the creative, Ferlando would disagree. Young takes advantage of every medium to grow his audience. Adding to the culture of remix/cover songs having visuals, Ferlando has creatively released visuals for both his G-Star Jeans (Champagne Poetry) freestyle in addition to his Why Me Freestyle.

Post the SoundCloud release of Illegal Tapes Volume 2, Ferlando was recently nominated MAMA Awards Best Hip-Hop Artist Nomination; once you dig into his craft and become an official squadron of the FYSeason movement, SMS mamap 2657 to 47439 (follow the poster’s instructions) SMS costs R3.
Keep your eyes on the Prince of the 3rd, his stamp in the game is imminent.
