Sam Turpin shows us the  new single Broken Mirror

Joburg-based South African alternative Hip Hop artist, Sam Turpin returns to the mic with a new single titled Broken Mirror. Broken Mirror follows a short hiatus that found him playing bass guitar as a member of The Charles Gene Suite and re-joining his collaborative project Cold Chinese Food with producer Illa N.

Pinned to a backdrop of a singing harp instrument, moody bass lines and rhythmic percussion, Broken Mirror sees Sam Turpin lamenting the difficulties of being honest, integral and altruistic in a world full of shiesty individuals and manipulative social systems. Something that many empaths and introverts can relate to.

On Broken Mirrors, Turpin explores the moral dilemmas we all face when forced to make decisions within a social context. He highlights the rotten system while contrasting this with the purity and well intentions he has with music. In all of this he paints a picture of a recurring door and the reality of “what goes around, comes around”.

Delivered in an almost detached manner, Turpin’s cadence on Broken Mirrors is cool and aloof, perhaps a sign of how he distances himself from his observations as a way to protect himself from the reality of the world and its system. This also affirms the reason why the two verses on the song seemingly don’t relate in subject matter as well as in tone. On the first verse he pulls us closer to his world, describing the journey of how he discovered that music can save him from his depression and loss of his mother. On the second one, he lashes at the atrocious systems within the music industry. Calling out the people who continue to perpetrate this behaviour.

He isn’t the flashiest or most technically advanced of emcees, yet he always seems to bring exactly what a track was calling for. The overall feeling of Broken Mirror is testament to his demeanour as an artist and person, laidback and accessible.

The latest in a string of single releases and music videos, Broken Mirror arrives with the announcement of Sam’s next full length project, an upcoming mixtape titled Syncope which is set to drop very soon.

Broken Mirror is out now on all major streaming platforms. Please see links below:
