Beat Sampras release a contemplative love song, Do It For You, alongside Hanna
Today on Alternative Tuesdays, we look at the refreshingly post R&B sounds of Cape Town duo Beat Sampras. Made up of Kenyan producer David Migwalla and South African guitarist and vocalist Dylan Fine, Beat Sampras was formed off what was meant to be a once off collaboration. 4 years later, they are putting out music that breaks the mould of traditional R&B and soul while lending itself to an ambient and atmospheric sound. The duo has released their newest single titled Do it For You featuring Hanna.
Do It For You is an ambient and melodic R&B song with obvious pop and Trap Soul elements. The familiar sensual bass, coupled with Dylan’s offhand vocals make Do It For You a casual and easy listen. This is not to say the content of the song is not heavy. Do It For You is a contemplative ode to those who don’t want to let go in relationships, even though things are going south. Dylan’s tone is mournful and combined with the sad guitar chords and minimal beat captures the bitter-sweet elements in relationship dynamics. Hanna is the right amount of sober and adds a different perspective as she rap-sings her departure from a lover’s life.
“I packed up, but I’ve been at the door thinking this ain’t it. And I know I act up, but coz you know how to get to me. I’m just trying to stack up and let go of this energy. I don’t know what’s best for me or who’s got the remedy.”
Do It For You follows Beat Sampras runaway debut album, Cruise. This 8 track EP, released in September 2019, sees the effortless blend and transition between smooth RnB and clean Afro-Beats set the perfect foundation for melodic and down-to-earth songwriting with the listener invited to sit shotgun for the ride. Do It For You is a worthy follow-up to Cruise.
