Artist Profile – Meet Visual Artist Jody Paulsen
Published 2 years ago by

Paulsen’s work goes beyond the formal qualities of collage, by merging seemingly chaotic and disconnected visual and text references to create new totalities that reflect on contemporary moods.

A Cape Town, South Africa native, Jody Paulsen treats gender identity and sexual orientation like an artist’s material, frequently foregrounding his queer, mixed-race identity in works that might combine Disney characters and other pop-figure icons even as they simultaneously evoke universally known fashion brands.

Delicate Boy.

According to SMAC Gallery, his medium, fuzzy felt, is a potent choice. It’s a textile associated with children’s playtime and early learning experiences, but when transferred into the contemporary art space and paired with Paulsen’s thematic explorations it creates a tension between content and medium.

The felt acts as a guide to learning about oneself and unpacking the different versions of self we inhabit as we get older.

Paulsen’s work goes beyond the formal qualities of collage, by merging seemingly chaotic and disconnected visual and text references to create new totalities that reflect on contemporary moods.

Everything is Wonderful.
