After the successful opening of their 9th store in Pretoria, Bathu celebrates yet another opening of a store in Nelspruit, bringing them to a total of 10 retail stores in South Africa.
Although faced with many obstacles considering the disruptive challenges posed by the global Corona Virus pandemic, Bathu has managed to rise above the circumstances to add yet another physical store under their retail brand. Speaking on the obstacles the brand faced, CEO, Theo Baloyi had this to say:
“It’s been difficult. We had big plans for the year, and we wanted to move spaces and expand our retail footprint. Those plans are delayed but we’re moving to our headquarters in Centurion. It was a hard six weeks of losing revenue, but we stuck it out. We at Bathu believe in people before profit. We had to let some people go initially but now we’ve been able to rope those people back into the business as they’re important to the brand.”
Besides having a passion for shoes, at the heart of Baloyi’s business is his love and passion to give back and uplift his community in which he grew up in. Having employed over 60 people from Alexandra and also acquired a warehouse in Centurion, Baloyi has certainly shown that he is dedicated to improving the lives of South Africans. Speaking on his time working for a major accounting firm, Baloyi says:
“I was fortunate enough to work for this big company, but each time I went back to ekasi I saw brothers and sisters struggling. And so the primary idea was to create sustainable jobs in these communities.”
In addition to this, Bathu sources as well as manufactures all its products locally to keep and promote local business. And with the Baloyi planning to expand into overseas markets, one can only expect for this proudly South African brand to reach even greater heights.
