A young man in a tuxedo runs through the forest. With him is a friend… are they groom and best man late for a wedding? Then the friend stumbles and falls, and hands over flags to our hero, who carries on running, continuing the dreamlike mission… Back in the city, the same young man sits on his bed, his back to the night sky, just woken from a dream…
The brand-new video from Johannesburg muso Capso for his track Dreams, playlisted on Trace, Channel O, MTV and MK, was shot in Johannesburg and Mpumalanga. The singer also codirected the video. “We’re thrilled at how it turned out,” says Capso. “We were aiming for a dreamlike quality and we wanted it to evoke a feeling of people working together, different nations pulling together, an urgency to reach a goal that is bigger than the individual, that involves us all. Unity, hope and determination – that is the message.”
Capso recently collaborated with MxO and also featured as Lira’s love interest in her video Phakade, but before that he had massive success with his own song, Afrika, which became hugely popular across the continent in 2009. Earlier he had also released an album called Things Are As They Are, while signed at Gresham Records. Today, he has his own record label, Bouge Records (“bouge” means “move” in French), and loves the access that the internet gives musicians to reach their fans; he hopes to release more strong songs with striking videos at regular intervals.
The 29-year-old artist was born in the DRC, hence the French connection, but has been living in South Africa since he was seven, where his love for music really developed. As the son of a preacher, Capso was brought up around the music he heard in church where his father preached. He was always surrounded by instruments in a house full of music lovers coming and going between rehearsals for the church band, so he soon started making music of his own. His style has developed into urban hip hop and raprobeat with social commentary elements.
While he chose to wear a tuxedo for the Dreams video, Capso’s fashion preference also leans towards an urban, African-inspired feel. The singer collaborated with Cape Town fashion designer Stiaan Louw to create a wardrobe of textured, earthy, garments that is both urban and African. “I want people to see Capso and know where I’m from – here, there and everywhere, but ultimately, African.”
When he is not writing music and looking for inspiration for his next video, Capso works as a Special Content Development consultant for the international Trace Group. “Today is yesterday’s dream of tomorrow/If you’re hearing this I’m living my dreams, we’ll see what follows” – Dreams, Capso
