Cassper Nyovest fires shots at K.O!

By Bernice Maune

The rap game just heated up and got elevated to another level. It’s no secret that local  hip hop musos have been reluctant to take shots at each other in the past, preferring to skirt issues – but this has changed with the release of the MTV Base hottest MCs list which has promoted a response from some of the people mentioned. Reason said he wasn’t comparable with AKA, Cassper Nyovest and others, instead he was in a league of his own and preferred to be grouped with lyricists like Drake and Kendrick Lamar. Kwesta jumped on that bandwagon too, releasing King’s Speech, showing off his catchy flow.

Now, Cassper Nyovest has dropped his response to the list with a track aptly titled Beef. He goes hard at his rivals, mentioning AKA and calling out ‘number one’ who is K.O. ‘I done made a mil trying to fuck Minnie… I’m cool with number 2 coz I’m richer than number one.” Cassper goes in, adding that none of the people on the list went gold in two months and achieved half of what he has in the past year. He also takes a swipe at DJ Vigilante who was on the MTV Base panel, is part of the Cashtime Life team and is good friends with AKA too.

To recap, Cassper has had a brilliant year, embarking on a 15 city tour, collaborating with Talib Kweli, DJ Drama and featuring on a slew of hot singles. He signed Chad Da Don and Major League to his label and although he has been in the rap game for over a year, is nominated for 8 SA Hip Hop awards and netted about  R3 million from album sales and a nationwide tour.

K.O on the other hand has been tight lipped about his bank account which is undoubtedly impressive, as he boasts a ten year career in which he enjoyed best selling hip hop album status with Tear Gas. He flipped the script with his brainchild, Cashtime Life which has signed on  Kid X, Ma-E, Maggz, DJ Vigilante and Nomuzi Mabena. As the co-owner of Cashtime he signs off  on cheques too and is behind the success of his label mates. It doesn’t end there for K.O as his single CaraCara broke the record to reach one million views on YouTube. He has just released his solo album, Skhanda Republic. While we don’t really expect K.O to reply to this shot fired by Cassper, we will wait in anticipation to see how this ‘Beef’ influences the rap game and who is going to follow suit and show their cards or money if you will.
