In a recent interview with Bhuda T on the podcast called Choppn It, DJ Speedsta, shared his insights about how important it is to have strong partnerships with brands when organising hip-hop events. According to him, bringing a creative vision to life involves much more than just passion, it requires the right partners and a strategic approach to brand collaborations. This means that if you want to put together an impactful event, you really need to think about which brands can help you achieve that goal.
During the interview, Speedsta expressed the financial realities involved in organising major events and discussed why he finds it crucial to work with well-known brands like Johnny Walker and Tanqueray. He pointed out that, when he first set out to plan an event, his initial aspiration was to create an intimate gathering with about 150 people. However, as he began to look into the costs of executing such an event, it quickly became clear that financial considerations would present significant challenges.
“I thought it was difficult asking for money because SA hip-hop is not in the forefront right now,” Speedsta admitted, acknowledging the current struggles within the genre. Nevertheless, his perspective changed when he found himself sitting in boardrooms and pitching his idea to potential partners. He realised that many brands possess the necessary funding to support events, they just need to see the value in what you’re presenting.
By building strong collaborations with influential brands, artists and event organizers can bring their ideas to life, ultimately benefiting the entire SA hip-hop scene.
