Lindiwe Bhungane

Lindiwe Bhungane is a singer and songwriter born in Zambia to exiled South African and Mozambican parents. She always knew that wanted to have a career in music so after finishing her secondary education, Lindiwe moved to Lusaka and it is there that she linked up with various bands such as B-Sharp and Jazz connection.

In her first year in the band circuit, she was the youngest female to be nominated and win the biggest award in Zambia, the Zambia Music Award for Best Female Performer. She was also the youngest woman to be included in the book 100 Women Celebrated in Zambia. The accolades did not stop there, she went on to win several other awards which cemented her place in the industry. These awards include the Battle of the Bands award for Best Female Performer as well as the Mukuba Award for Artist of the year.

In 2011, she decided to try her hand at acting and she soon realised that she can also venture into that as a viable career. She booked a role in the hit Broadway musical, Dreamgirls. Not only did she receive rave reviews for her debut performance but she also won a Naledi Theatre Award for Best Performance in a Musical. In addition to this, she has also performed in many festivals and concerts all across the world.

She is ready to take her career to the next level and blow up. Earlier last month, she participated in the Coke Studio challenge where she collaborated with fellow vocalist Morena The Squire and producer Cueber. The song has tribal house influences and vocals that are both sweet and soothing but they are also haunting. The voices of both Morena and Lindiwe blend well together and they have managed to create a great sound with the aid of producer Cueber.

Lindiwe describes the sound she makes as traditional and commercial with influences from genres such as hip hop, dancehall, soft rock, soul and African folk. She is inspired by artists such as Brenda Fassie, Angelique Kidjo among others. This makes sense as the music she makes is a fusion of soul, dancehall, R&B and Afro pop.

She released her first album, I Believe, in 2013 and her single So Lucky in 2016. She is currently working on her second album. Take a listen to music from Lindiwe and Morena The Squire produced by Cueber live at The Coke Studio.
