Gcina Nkula better known as DotCom and of course as Nadia Nakai’s ex love thang, is a rapper, singer and professional dancer. He started off as a dancer where his talent took him to participate in competitions overseas such as the Hip Hop World Championships in Los Angeles in 2007 and 2009. He has also performed on big stages such as the dance show So You Think You Can Dance and the opening ceremony of the FIFA Soccer World Cup.
All this time DotCom had his first love, hip hop, in mind and true to his nature, his hip hop career is just as embellished as his dancing career. During 2011, he opened for well renowned American rappers such as Busta Rhymes and Fat Joe at ZAR fest Zimbabwe. He has also dropped a couple chart topping singles such as Get Mine and Izapha featuring Cassper Nyovest.
DotCom is back with a new project called the Love and Liquor Mixtape which he dropped about 3 months ago. This is a dope offering which is both very abstract and personal. He shows off both his rapping side but also taps into his singing persona and introduces to us a rare side of him.
The dominant sound being 90’s R&B and very self reflective lyrics. For instance, his track 10 Thousand, he samples the melody for Destiny’s Child’s Say My Name. He also samples the melody and modifies the lyrics of I Swear by All4One on Love You Long Time. In this song, he sings about his crush and how fly she is and how much he appreciates her love.
Too Many Girls features DJ Speedsta and Da Les and it’s about how there are too many girls to love and he doesn’t want to commit to just one. To prove how banging the song is, DotCom is shooting a video for it. We can’t wait! Phola is also a banger and definitely for the dance floor, listen to the baseline and tell me you don’t agree. We thank Kwesta and Nadia Nadia for the freshness on this.
Take It Back is a heartbreaking song about him messing up and not treating his girl right. In this song, he is wishing that he could take back all the hurt and make things right again. It’s hella smooth. A dedication to Nadia Nakai perhaps?
To be honest, the singing gets a bit much after a while when all I want are fire verses and dope flows. I suppose it’s because I listened to the mixtape all in one go and perhaps DotCom is determined to go in the R&B or Thug n B route, as he calls it. You decide for yourself and if you haven’t heard the Mixtape, you can stream it here.
