Dr Portia Gumede on treating acne in Darker Skin Tones.
Acne is a condition where oils glands of the skin become clogged, forming spots, pimples, and sometimes cysts. Fortunately for us, we caught up with aesthetic expert Dr Portia Gumede who is all about educating women and men of colour about how to correctly and safely treat acne on darker skins.
Dr Portia Gumede has always had an interest in dermatology and aesthetics. She obtained a medical degree from the University of KwaZulu-Natal in 2002 and later completed her aesthetic training at the renowned American Academy of Aesthetic Medicine. Her passion for skin health and cosmetic treatments led her to start her own aesthetic clinic called Dr P.
Located in Hyde Park, Johannesburg, Dr P Aesthetic Lifestyle Centre is a medical aesthetic and lifestyle experience that offers a range of quality services for individuals that are looking to treat and maintain their skin concerns.
Dr P is passionate about educating patients with darker skin tones about the best way to treat acne. There are myths and products out there that can permanently damage one’s skin and she believes that melanin skin tones have the advantage of ageing more gracefully when compared to their lighter counterparts. She gave us insights on how to treat acne;
In darker skin tones we have to treat acne much more swiftly and efficiently than in lighter skin tones because there is a greater chance of developing post inflammatory pigmentation and scarring,
Explains Gumede.
She has treated Mzansi celebs such as Simphiwe Ngema and Takkies.
Many of us can testify that acne has a tendency to pop up at any age, and that thinking it will subside once you leave your teens is a myth,
Adult acne can be the result of many different factors like hormones, the wrong skin care, hair products, stress and even diet plays a role,
Says Dr P.
