Award-winning rapper, Gigi Lamayne has been steadily making her mark in the South African hip hop industry and surely her talent is speaking for itself. She has delivered hits such as Ice-Cream, Jungle Fever, Moja and her last offering Shisa, which was also well received. Her track, Jungle Fever was recently play-listed on the BBC 1 Xtra in the U.K. The rapper just recently signed to Mabala Noise Entertainment, as recent as earlier on today!
Gigi Lamayne is back with a new track and she is leading us to iGenesis, her much anticipated debut album. Well, that has two meanings, the beginning and it is the title of her upcoming album. In the track Isigubhu, she features kwaito artist Duncan. Duncan is a kwaito artist signed to Afrotainment and has been featured on tracks by some of Mzansi’s popular artists such as Big Nuz and Zakwe.
I certainly know Gigi for her bars and I have to admit, the girl can rap. The track is about isigubhu (drum). The beat is fresh and produced by J Twinn, who brought some playfulness to the track.
I have no idea what she was trying to achieve with this track but it’s not a bad listen. She paints ‘90s kind of imagery with her lyrics and the beat goes with it. The track is not deep or complicated, it’s just a dance song with a repetitive hook – and there is nothing wrong with that.
Duncan sounds like the classic kwaito artist from the ‘90s; the likes of Mapaputsi. He brings in a clean element to the track and he packs some clever punchlines.
This song has made it’s debut on some of the county’s biggest radio stations such as Metro FM and 5FM and the love has been tremendous. Check out some of the tweets below:
