From the tiny area known as Sophiatown came a community and a people without equal. Eclectic and colourful, vibrant and energetic, Sophiatown was a multiracial melting pot of characters all giving rise to a rich pool of creative talent. Now, the Hansa Festival of Legends invites you to step back in time to that electrifying musical era of the 1940s and 1950s on Saturday, 23 March. Experience South Africa’s dynamic jazz, blues, marabi and kwela jive legacy from inside the Festival’s special Legends Tribute Lounge at live music venue Bassline, in Newtown.
For the evening, the venue will be transformed to represent the mood and ambiance of the era, and guests will be entertained by artists such as Lilly Million, Lulo Café, Nothende, The Muffinz, DJ Mphoza and DJ Kenzhero performing their own music as well as tributes to the music of that time Discussing what music fans can expect, urban soul singer Nothende Madumo said, “The energy around the entire Hansa Festival of Legends is good. The artists are excited and we hope the public is too.” Lilly Million agreed, “Who would not want to be part of such an awesome event? I’m very honoured to be included in this.”
But the Legends Tribute Lounge represents only one part of the 10-hour festival which will take place throughout the Newtown precinct, and which aims to cater for all ages and popular music tastes too. Some of the other artists who will be performing during the course of the evening include Teargas, Zakes Bantwini, Mdu, Arthur, Professor, Kelly Khumalo and DJs C-Live, Oskido and Dimplez. Hansa general manager Khensani Nobanda has a message for younger music lovers, “The Newtown precinct will be filled with non-stop action and all popular music genres. Concert goers can see over 40 of the funkiest musicians playing hip hop, kwaito, afro pop, and house beats.“Visit any of the three tribute lounges, enjoy a meal at a Newtown pavement cafe or the artisan food market, and relax at the open air gardens with the beer that h as the special ingredient!” Running from 2pm until midnight, the evening will be hosted by popular DJs Anele and Bob Mabena over three specially erected stages.”
