It has been making rounds since late last year on social media with well known South Africa personalities like Somizi, Ntando Duma and DJ Sabby gracing the streets in a pair. The Mesh Sneaker is a new, locally manufactured footwear from the notorious township – Alexandra.
Bathu (a popular slang name for any kind of shoe make) was founded in 2015 by Theo Baloyi “with the sole aim to tell a proudly untold South African township story to the world.” Made from a mesh material, the shoe is indeed one of it’s kind. It oozes the creativity and local flavor that is South African townships. Not only does it make you cool, it actually keeps you cool.
The shoe has been featured on several local magazines in South Africa and it is refreshing to see locally produced clothing items getting such good coverage.
The sneaker range currently comes in five different colors, with the white being the most popular and a limited edition. The affordability of the shoe shows that not only is the shoe made locally, but it is made for the locals as well. You can hook yourself up with a pair between R900 and R1200 all depending on your taste.
Driven by their identity and passion to design new shoes as well as always bringing new products in the market, the Bathu team will be releasing their loafer range and apparel in the next coming season. So do stay tuned.
We at Zkhiphani not only believe in pushing local content but also pushing young up and coming creatives. So, head on out and play your part.
