This past weekend was lit with the South African Music Awards taking centre stage. The evening was celebrating excellence in music and with every such event in SA, there are high and lowlights. Since we weren’t sure about what we were seeing, we relied on the power of Twitter to curate what was hot and what was not so hot. Peep some of the highlights of the awards:
We had very deserving winners
This should be the first thing that matters more than the fashion and the drama- the winners. The list of winners was impressive with Shekhinah taking 3 awards for Album of The Year, Female Artist as well as Newcomer of the year home. Shane Eagle did it big for hip hop when he won Best Hip Hop album for his debut offering, Yellow.
Destruction Boyz also took an award home for Record of the Year for their wildly popular and controversial single, Omunye. Another fan favourite who won was Sun-el Musician who went home with an award for Highest Airplay Special Composer for Akanamali featuring Samthing Soweto. Other winners included Lady Zamar, Prince Kaybee, Mafikizolo and Busiswa to name a few.
Rouge’s performance was everything!
Rouge won her first SAMA for the night and we cannot help but be glad that Rouge showed up with one of the best performances we have seen from her. Bringing tons of energy and swag to the SAMA stage, Rouge performed her song, CEO.

Tira’s wife & her stank attitude didn’t go down well
Mafikizolo could not attend the award ceremony despite winning 2 awards, Duo/Group of the Year and Best Afro-Pop album. In their absence, they asked DJ Tira’s wife, Gugu Khathi, to accept an award on their behalf. What got people in their feels was the way in which she accepted the award and her attitude while doing so. She looked disinterested, sounded rude and like she didn’t want to be there.

Mafikizolo saw how their fans felt because of this and they quickly issued an apology as well as explain Gugu’s attitude.

Riky Rick’s risqué fashion appearance
Riky Rick caught our attention. For real. After announcing his retirement from music, we were not expecting him at these awards. Let alone a performance from him. But in all honesty, what caught our attention is how he was dressed. Twitter ripped Riky Rick’s avant garde garb apart but we sort of like it. What do you think?
Robbie Malinga’s son and his very expensive taste
— Live a litte😍 (@Masweets_Itu) June 3, 2018
Robbie Malinga’s son had the twitter streets in a frenzy as he showed up at the awards in over the top expensive clothes. He had most Twitter users worried about how he is looking after his father’s legacy. His behaviour was OTT in the video below!

What do you think about our list: did we hit the mark or are we straight up hating? Let us know!
