I recently had a chat with a very interesting lady who goes by the name of Hlubi Mboya, this elegant woman needs no introduction as she is a popular South African actress best known for her former role as Nandipha Sithole on the SABC3 soapie Isidingo. We had a chitchat about the newest exciting occurrences in her life, Hlubi is one of those bubbly, happy individuals who are full of life with a surprisingly positive energy that never seems to fade. The interview took place at a little intimate coffee shop at Rosebank in Joburg in a chilly Friday afternoon, she had everybody’s attention the moment when she stepped through the door as she was dressed in a black outfit and I felt the nippy room temperature slowly rising up. I stood up to greet her and before I could compliment her on her eye-catching look she said “wow you look nice”. That’s another good quality I like about Mboya, she always finds something nice to say about another person, and then she quickly took a seat as she gently pushed away the menu catalogue that was in front of her and asked the waiter for some coffee.
She explained that she was one of those popular girls in high school seeing that she was involved in a lot of school activities, Hlubi is currently 34 years old so she was part of the first generation black groups to attend the former “model c” schools. She had a random memory of the good old days and said: “one day I went to school with long braids and the teacher told me that they were too glamorous” she laughed out loud. High School is where she first started acting, she fell in love with poetry and Shakespeare. She knew right there and then that she wanted to be an actor but she went on to study 3rd world politics and world labour law at UCT coz her parents are academics and they wanted her to have something she could fall back on in case the media industry didn’t work out. She joined Isidingo in the year 2000 and was with the local soapie for over a decade, starred in a couple of films like “Shogun Khumalo is dying” and she is currently very excited about the latest project she is involved in which is based on a corporate, capitalistic African world called “Jacob’s crossing”. “The secret to success is to rise above criticism, have a mentor, be friends with your challengers and love what you do with a passion” she said.
The range rover evoque
Hlubi also happens to be an ambassador for the sexy urban ride the range rover evoque, “I chose the Fuji White just for a complete change from my two previous Freelanders which were Santorini Black. My choice for the Dynamic Sport is that it is closer to the ground it has a real urban feel and very fierce which suits my personality perfectly. Three door just represents my urban nature and still having fun in my city – no kids attached (laughs) The wheels really give my Range Rover Evoque a hip hop feel and an urban groove. The Audio/Sound system represents my love and excuse to party and if a girl can’t get to the club the club will be in her Evoque!!” she said. With that being said she explained that due to her involvement in many charity organizations she feels that she is a mother to many seeing that she is still very much career driven so she chooses to wait till she is ready to have babies. For now its just her career, her mean evoque ride and the future!
