The Hugh Masekela Heritage Festival returns to the soils of Soweto for the second year running. This takes place on Saturday 29 November. The musical offering is hand-picked by bra Hugh himself to celebrate South Africa’s rich cultural heritage. He is passionate about the power and potential of our nation’s cultural diversity: “There is so much diversity in our country, and it is high time that we celebrate that.” And this is the very reason for the variety of musical styles the line-up offers attendees which include Tsepo ‘The Village Pope’ Tshola, The Soul Brothers, Beatenberg, Jeremy Loops, Laurie Levine and Josie Field. The night’s festivities will close with Hugh Masekela taking to the stage to share jewels from his repertoire, a body of music that stretches over half a century of creative input.
Bra Hugh is an ardent advocate of the nurturing of our cultural heritage, especially among our youth. At the recent inaugural Hugh Masekela Annual lecture he stressed the importance of appreciating and treasuring our own culture and heritage: “We are becoming a society that imitates other cultures, yet we have the biggest diversity of heritage”.
