Instagram to Remove the “Following” Feature by This Week

Published

One of Instagram’s most greatest lurking and stalking tools has been reported to be no more by this week. According to the social media platform, the “following” tab located in the Activity feed will be removed.  The feature is currently displayed inside the heart icon alongside the “You” section where users can find their personal feed details. Once removed, users can no longer view what their friends, family and favourite accounts have been up to – for instance, what accounts they have been liking or following.

But if you’re like most people and didn’t know about this feature’s existence until reading this article then you have nothing to stress or worry about. Even Instagram’s head of product, Vishal Shah recognizes this lack of awareness for the feature which is partly why the “following” tab will be taken down.

“People didn’t always know that their activity is surfacing. So you have a case where it’s not serving the use case you built it for, but it’s also causing people to be surprised when their activity is showing up”

– Instagram’s Head of Product, Vishal Shah

For the most part, fewer people are actually using the feature and thus by removing it, the app is provided with the opportunity to declutter. Shah adds that “simplicity was the driving factor” for the social media platform’s decision.

So for all you Instagram fashion bloggers and influencers who did know about this feature and are now disappointed in hearing that you will no longer be receiving the latest updates on your favourite fashion accounts, never fret because there’s always the explore page. Although it might not keep you updated on your favourite accounts’ activities, the feature can help you find other new, cool and relevant accounts to follow.
