Born in 1998 and raised in Soweto, Lindiwe Modiselle was raised mostly by her mother from a young age and has been her biggest inspiration. After being through a lot as a family, she has grown up to be an independent woman because of her – which is where most of Lindwe’s drive comes from, to constantly seek to be better and do better. Taking a conscious decision to not just get an education, but make sure that her passions are able to become future careers was her forte.
Her love for fashion began when she got into thrifting (second hand clothing). Modiselle loved the idea of being able to take on different personas from 80’s fashion to street wear in the 90’s, and because of that, she is able to fully immerse herself in the world of colour and art through fashion. Realising that with fashion, it’s less about what’s the next big thing, but what can stand the test of time. Creating classics other than fashion fads is what she wants for her brand Selle.
Deeming Rich Mnisi as her fashion icon solely because of his craftsmanship and exploration of pattern and colour, his multifaceted nature would be the highlight of Lindiwe’s inspiration towards him, with one of her missions being wanting to be able to bring her visions to life. Seeing his culture and background through the pieces he creates are some of the takeaways she gravitated towards and wants her journey to be seen through her work.
Same as Aimee Leon Dore, one of the brands Lindiwe idolises, which is a fashion and lifestyle brand that is so simple yet rooted in culture. All the collections tell a story and that’s what she sees Selle going into, storytelling. She envisions her brand as a business that does not only create garments, but a community that she sees in the Aimee Leon Dore brand.
As a digital creator, Lindiwe Modiselle has been a part of both local and international campaigns, one of my first ones being Converse One Star campaign, and later followed by the Converse Mountain Club campaign, which was then showcased at the Converse store in Soho, New York and Converse global Instagram page.
As an influencer and creative, she prides herself in authenticity and being unapologetically herself and believes that being an influencer isn’t about numbers, but the power to bridge the gap between brand and audience. “Only you can tell your story because you live it” is a mantra that she lives by to help solidify her place in the creative art space
