Renowned South African Hip-Hop artist Jay Makopo is a young hip hop artist who has BEEEEN on the come up and looks like he is about to break out in a big way. We featured him and did an interview with him a few months ago that you can read here. The young rapper who has done remixes for songs such as Doc Shebeleza by Cassper Nyovest and Boss Zonke by Riky Rick has proven that he can hang on his own. He has released a new song titled The One.
Jay Makopo’s music has been receiving major love from fans and he has garnered quite a following. By the look of his YouTube page, this young man is clearly ready for the big time. He is out with a new joint, The One, and he has been getting some love for it.
The track is described as a unique fusion of thumping Hip-Hop/Trap beats & South African Tribal House flavor. No doubt, I found the beat incredibly refreshing and accompanied with his bars, whoo! Fire! He sounds like a seasoned rapper in The One and I’m surprised he hasn’t shot a vid for this to accompany the release of this track.
He produced the beat himself, showing off his many talents some of which include video editing. The track has a dope hook, it is a sing-a-long and the beat is easy to dance to. The break in the beat was a pleasant surprise for me where he has what sounds like young girls singing “this is the one”. There is definitely commercial appeal for this song.
Makopo is clearly an expressive rapper and nothing about him sounds dull and boring. The dude can really rap, there is no doubt about it. The lyrics are imaginative and playful and he does punch a few bars here and there for us rap critics to appreciate. “The One is a radio and club friendly hit, tipped to be one of the hottest songs this summer!’ Well, we’ll let you be the judge of that. Listen to the track below and tell us what you think.
