John Vlismas is back. And this time he has brought the fate of mankind with him. After the extraordinary success of the multimedia feast that was ‘40’ last year, John Vlismas has embarked on an exploration through the fiery depths of the world coming to an end. The anarchic comedian has ruffled some feathers, insulted some Afrikaans icon that likes to speed on the highway and show us all his take current affairs, but ‘Revelations’ promises to be something a bit different from what he has done in the past.
Every generation is determined to believe in the world ending in their lifetime, from Mayan calendars to the Big Kill, to particle experiments gone wrong, even Obama being the Antichrist, and yet we always survive.
This is the one of the themes of Vlismas’ latest orgy of dark belly laughter. Other nerves he promises to attack with razors are: family, friends, children, peace, hope, faith and charity, as well as an all-out attack on the current president, or “that totally busted thief of an **shole” as he refers to the head of state.
Vlismas also says that while he has focused on massive production design recently, this show will also be a return to basics – “comedy is an intimate act between me and you, f*** the tricks and whistles, this show is about the jokes, the speed, the taboos – I’m going back to basics here, more laughs per minute… there’ll be some nice touches, but this is all about me and the crowd having a really good time…”
“As middle age advances, I feel the urgency to poke holes in accepted reality increase… we’re running out of time to point out the flaws in our own plot, and the arc has already peaked – so this show is to make sure that no stone has been left unturned, and by stone, I mean racism, corruption and mentally retarded country singers called Sunette.”
He describes his show as a “sacred cow apocalypse” while his mother claims it is a “surgical tour de force to be reckoned with” (she may have been drinking, it was already late morning when we called.) His father commented, “Oh, Christ, is he still trying to be funny?” and a former geography teacher was heard to say – “he’s very odd, I’m not surprised the other boys tried to kill him.” We say “revelations” is a razor sharp rampage, a stand-up monster tap dancing across your mind. Open up, here he comes…
Catch John Vlismas, in his usual foul but thought-provoking mood with sound, lights and jokes that will leave your brain begging to be hosed down.
Seriously, you don’t want to miss this extravaganza of your mind going ‘I can’t believe he just said that and I just saw that!’ Who knows, there just might be a well-known local music act that performs at the show but you will just have to go and find out for yourself, won’t you.
