If we got R1 for every up and coming artist who accused an established artist of stealing their music then we would be rich ya’all! For real. The latest artist to be accused of stealing music is Ambitiouz Entertainment producer and DJ, Citi Lyts.
DJ Citi Lyts is known for his handful of hits with the biggest being Vura featuring Sjava and Saudi. He recently dropped his latest hit, Malambane featuring heavyweight artists such as Emtee, Kid Tini, S.Villa, La Sauce and Blaq Diamond. This is the joint that he is accused of stealing.
The man in question is Toto Mboto. According to Toto, DJ Citi Lyts contacted iLLmatic, who is featured on his original song requesting music for his upcoming project. However, Citi Lyts never got back to iLLmatic regarding which joints he would use. A while later, Citi Lyts made an announcement on Facebook regarding an upcoming song he would be releasing soon. He then released an album artwork of his latest single only to find out it has the exact same title as one of the tracks he recieved from iLLmatic.
Upon listen to the single, Toto realised it was the same song! Citi Lyts slightly changed the beat and included powerhouse features but the concept and the melody of the song has been adapted from Toto’s original, uMalambane. Considering the fact that Toto’s song was recorded and released last year, this makes Citi Lyts hella suspicious. Plus all of this was done without Toto’s consent.
DJ Citi Lyts has gone on radio, YFM’s Hip Hop Floor, to deny that he stole the song but he has confirmed that he knows Toto and that Toto may have sent him a couple of songs. But the main point is that he got the single with the hook already on the song and he had to select the features and handle the outro. As far as any similarities, DJ Citi Lyts commented that he didn’t hear any similarities in the songs and in fact, his version is the better version: “If people want to compare, then I know I have the better version…”.
