Blackberry South Africa hosted a Kid Cudi secret gig this past weekend on the 23rd of February in Modderfontein at the Greenstone Park in the east of Joburg.
Tickets were not sold for this exclusive event as the attendees either knew somebody who knows somebody to get there or they had to win tickets through a special Facebook or 5FM competition.
The event took place the same night as the Metro FM awards so it was not attended by a lot of Jozi elites as most of them were busy partying up a storm in Durban but we did spot a few popular faces who I assume didn’t get an invite to the Metro’s, either that or they are really hard core Cudi fans.
I’ve realized that a lot of people do not even know who Kid Cudi is let alone know that he was in the country this past weekend so for those of you who don’t know here is a little history lesson:
Kid Cudi is an American alternative hip hop recording artist, singer-songwriter, guitarist, record producer and actor from Cleveland, Ohio.
He first gained major attention after the release of his debut mixtape A Kid Named Cudi (2008). In 2009, his single “Day ‘n’ Nite” reached the top five of the Billboard Hot 100 and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs charts. “Day ‘n’ Nite” was included on his mixtape as well as his debut studio album Man on the Moon: The End of Day (2009), which was later certified Gold.
In 2010 he released his second studio album Man on the Moon II: The Legend of Mr. Rager, preceded by the release of two singles “Erase Me” and “Mr. Rager”. He has sold over 4.6 million digital singles and has worked with Kanye West, Common, David Guetta and other artists signed to the GOOD Music label.
The local acts who supported Cudi on stage were Major League, AKA, Vigi Lante as well as DJ Milkshake.
