One of the country’s most beloved hip-hop festivals makes a grand return to the stage, Maftown Heights. Known for uniting lovers of hip-hop, Motswako, and local urban culture, Maftown Heights is back with a highly anticipated reunion edition on Friday, 29 November 2024, at the iconic Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown, Johannesburg. Early bird tickets go live this Friday, 4 October 2024.
This year’s Maftown Heights promises an unforgettable experience, not just a celebration of music, but a tribute to the rich cultural heritage of Motswako. From its inception, Maftown Heights has been a cultural mainstay, evolving into a powerhouse platform that has hosted South Africa’s finest talents, including the late HHP, AKA, and Riky Rick.
In 2024, the festival returns bigger and bolder, with a lineup that is sure to honour its past while shaping the future of African music. This year’s festival celebrates a long-awaited reunion of Motswako pioneers and trailblazers, and introduces the “NuTswako” artists who are championing the Motswako sound with Maglera Doe Boy holding the baton as this year’s festival curator alongside Khuli Chana.
Festival-goers can expect an explosive fusion of music, fashion, and food. The Motswako magic will be brought to life not only through its performers but through an array of experiences designed to celebrate the ethos of unity, originality, and creative expression that Maftown Heights embodies.
“We are thrilled to return with a reunion edition of Maftown Heights,” shares Khuli Chana and Refiloe Ramogase, the festival co-founders. “Maftown Heights is more than just a festival; it’s a movement that continues to inspire and shape youth culture in South Africa. This reunion is our way of reflecting on the journey of Motswako and celebrating the new wave of talent that keeps the culture alive.”
