In the album, Maglera Doe Boy talks about his childhood and where he grew up. He uses a spooky, opera-like sound in “Memoirs” and sad music in “Dor Do Povo” to show the tough life many young people experience in the township.
In the song “Makazana,” the rapper openly describes the tough life in his neighbourhood, talking about crime and ongoing poverty in the township despite South Africa’s years of democracy. In an interview on Channel 0’s Deconstructed, the rapper talked about the meaning of the “Makazana” chorus and how it reflects life in the townships today.
“Makazana is a song about how time can fly in the township and the township is not a black concept it is a gulag which is a concentration camp and that’s why it is positioned the way it is. From the bridges, so they could cut us off if we had war, to the trees so they could burn them if we had war,” said Maglera .
