The MAMAs were the place to be this weekend. Africa’s finest in music gathered at the Ticketpro Dome on Saturday to usher in one of the continent’s most anticipated award ceremonies, the MTV Africa Music Awards. Beside the host drama that unfolded on Friday morning, the award show went smoothly with Bonang Matheba, Nomzamo Mbatha and Nigerian afropop singer, Yemi Alade holding it down.
The red carpet was lit and had the usual slayers who always bring their A-game to celebs in wardrobe disasters that had us gasping, “WTF”. We’ve summed up some of the MAMA red carpet looks in categories of, the Good, the Bad and the Ugly.
The Good:
Wow, Minnie wasn’t here for games. She slayed in his hot look.
You can never go wrong in any Maxhosa outfit. The Major League DJ’s know it too. This is definitely an effortless and high fashion look.
Babes Wodumo could wear a black plastic bag and we’d still love her. She looked beautiful in this red number.
Sizwe Dlomo channeled Eddie Murphy in Coming to America with this “Oga” look! He looks like Nigerian royalty. We dig!
Boity came to slaughter the masses and boy did she massacre us in that jumpsuit. Pure fire!
We’ve never seen Cassper Nyovest so clean and we are loving it. He looked real dapper in his three-piece suit. Next time, he must just leave those socks behind!
Queen B*, need we say more!
Socialite, Leroy Marc was so fierce in that blazer. We also love the refreshing pop of colour that came from Ayanda MVP.
The Bad:
This category is really about those celebs whose outfits we really couldn’t make up our minds on. Think along the lines of “good outfit, poor execution”.
Dineo Moeketsi and her cute bae, Solo are our favourite when it comes to red carpet look,s but we’re not sure about this one. It’s the kind of outfit that leaves you confused on whether or not you like it. The upper part of Dineo’s ensemble is to die for though.
Great suit; we just wished that MoFlava could have left that tie home and replaced his peach shirt with a white one! This look would have been killer!
Checkered suits are hard to pull off – not everyone gets them right. Aaron got it right, yes, but that pattern is straining our eyes! A twitter troll even said it reminded her of her grandmother’s handkerchief (not our handwriting).
Caster Semenya’s wife, Violet sure has a beautiful torso. We’re just not sure this outfit was the right one to showcase it in.
Blazer dresses are sexy AF and their over sized counterparts too trendy. We’re, however, not sold on Mantsoe Pout’s version of the look.
The Ugly:
We’re aware that Riky Rick is trying to build a name for himself as a fashionista but this is not how you go about it. He really looks like an “arme skepsel” over here.
Eish! Words fail us!
This jumpsuit was just not right on Noluthando!
This is what happens when bad outfits happen to good people!
Lerato Kganyago is a beautiful girl and although she can sometimes pull off great day-to-day outfits, red carpet looks always seem to evade her. We don’t know about this outfit.
Talk about an outfit anti-climax. Future’s red carpet and stage look was a real letdown. To think he flew all those hours only to “slay” us in this.
Beautiful woman, beautiful body, stunning shoes but a terrible choice of dress!
Yah neh! The struggle is real outchea!
The colour and pattern on this dress worn by Nomuzi is everything. Pity about the design.
Life is about balance, as with anything in life. So it’s only fair to say that, when it comes to fashion, some will get it right and others will get it very wrong. Nonetheless, celebs gave us fashion envy on the red carpet and served as best they can at the MAMAs.
