What’s the first thing that pops into your mind when you hear the term “izikhothane’? Many ordinary South Africans identify this term with colourful individuals who compete against each other or who do silly things like burn money for showmanship.
Over the years, the media has portrayed izikhothane’s as extravagant bunch of ‘useless wasteful boys who destroy other kids’, with that being said, we had to talk to a leader of this unique misunderstood Mzansi youth culture so that we can understand what it’s all about, from the horse’s mouth.
With a collective following of over 175 000 fans on social media, Tshepo Pitso who is popularly known as Material Don Dada is undoubtedly a leading fashion underdog in South Africa.
The 27 year old from Soweto is a self-taught graphic designer, fashion designer, video editor, drone pilot as well as an entrepreneur.
Don Dada opened up about his love for Italian clothing, music, his love for the izikhothane culture as well as his hidden skill as a graphic designer as well as being a brand ambassador for DMD clothing and creating his own fashion line.
Don Dada says all the negative reports about izikhothane burning money and wasteful spending are absolute nonsense; he says the culture is about having passion for great clothes and aspiring to living a good life.

Being an izikhothane is not an overnight decision, it just happens, you buy one item of clothing, then another…next thing you know your whole wardrobe is colourful and expensive, that’s how you become an izikhothane member
Pitso recently defied the odds by achieving something remarkable that his haters weren’t expecting, he became a brand ambassador and a designer for DMD clothing which is a leading Italian wear brand.
The brand approached him because of the strong influence he has on the township culture, he admits that it took a while for the brand to realise that he is a force to be reckoned with and now the future looks bright.
Don Dada says his deal with the DMD brand is a match made in heaven because their clothes make him feel unique because he is from the township and when he goes to the city like Braamfontein (Which is a melting pot for the youth culture) he feels like he is the talk of town and everyone wants to see what his outfit is all about.
He is more than a brand ambassador though; he also designed some DMD outfits that are currently available in shops.
Don Dada was also recently crowned the king of parties when he won the ultimate house party TV show competition earlier this year.
After weeks competing for a whooping R150 000 grand prize against 15 other contestants by throwing an ‘Ultimate House Party’ for a deserving friend/relative creating an epic night in experience, Don Dada was crowned the winner!
The leader of the new school izikhothane movement, clinched the grand prize and was crowned the king of the Ultimate House Party.
He walked away with not only R150 000 in prize money, but also with the hearts of adoring TV fans.
Winning the Castle Lite Ultimate House Party was more than a dream come true, it gave me the platform to demystify the stereotype of the izikhothane movement by showcasing our creativity in expressing our love for life. This is just the beginning for Don Dada
The show opened many doors for him as he has been featured on various music videos ever since and he exclusively revealed to zkhiphani that he is planning on releasing some music for the first time real soon.
Material Don Dada is a legend in the making and we wish him all the best with his career moving forward.

Gate Crash With Sphaka – S02 E09 (BHPS)
Check out the latest episode of Gate Crash With Sphaka where Sphaka invades the Bacardi House Party Session hosted by Heavy K and Moonchild Sanelly. Sphaka spoke to a few of the attendees such as Darkie Fiction and a few members of the audience and asked about the general vibe and what they were feeling. The responses were positive all around.
As the Bacardi was flowing, we were entertained by a collaboration between Moonchild Sanelly and Heavy K which Sphaka had to find out about. According to Heavy K who had a conversation with Sphaka said that the song only took 10 minutes to make. This is crazy considering how great the song sounded.
