The monthly ‘Movie Buffs’ event, brought to you by Ster-Kinekor, presents those who appreciate and love the medium of film as it should be experienced – on the big screen, with an opportunity to watch a new title before its release date – and to have a meaningful discussion about the film thereafter. The March ‘Movie Buffs’ title is Parker (release date: Friday 29 March). The event starts promptly at 17:00 on Sunday, 24 March at Ster-Kinekor The Zone in Rosebank. The monthly ‘Movie Buffs’ event is hosted by one of South Africa’s most respected and dedicated film commentators, Barry Ronge, who introduces the film beforehand and, following the screening, leads an interactive discussion about the production.
Commenting on the film, Barry Ronge writes: “Author Richard Stark was originally named Donald E. Westlake, a name that did not exactly exude power, intelligence and speed. So he invented a somewhat tainted hero, who has only one name – Parker – and he has featured in 24 tough, hard-driving novels. They have been hugely successful, with Parker as a “fixer” – an assassin, a spy and a killer.
“Many actors have played Parker in previous films, but Jason Statham fits this role like an expensive kid-glove. His dialogue is terse, his body is amazing and his weapon-skills are dazzling. The film starts when he is involved in a heist, with a team that Parker does not fully trust. His instincts prove true and that forces him to plan a vendetta filled with suspense, action and a twisty, surprising kick in the plot.
“In the supporting cast you will see Jennifer Lopez, who is accidentally drawn into the dangerous heist. Nick Nolte, Patti Lupone and Bobby Cannavale provide deftly played cameo roles that add style as this twisted and violent thriller unfurls. It plays out in Palm Beach, in a world populated by people with too much money. That’s where the heist of the decade is being prepared. “The film is slick, swift, stylish and entertaining, and Statham produces his signature style of terse, agile thrills that a five-star crime-thriller needs to deliver.”
If you want to watch the film and engage in meaningful conversation thereafter, join Barry Ronge and other Johannesburg ‘Movie Buffs’ for the screening of Parker on Sunday, 24 March at The Zone in Rosebank. The screening starts promptly at 17:00. Standard ticket prices apply and it is advisable to book early, as seating is limited.
