Ms Cosmo is the most for the ladies guys! She came out with the Now or Never Remix featuring an All Female Emcee cast and yep, you guessed right, they are still asking “What happened to rap?”. The remix was dropped on women’s day and came out just in time to celebrate women of all kinds especially the hip hop heads. The remix features some prominent female rappers that are already making their names in the game and others that are not as prominent but are killing it all the same.
The ladies did quite an impressive job! Every verse on this joint, besides being about the dope lines, it was more about inspiring and empowering women. I like that, There weren’t as many bars as the other remixes and it was honestly good. Mega Mafia is on first and her energy on this track was a bit flat. She does teach in her verse though, she’s got that on lock.
Ms Supa comes through with her deep voice and with mad bravado and charisma. “You bitches need tutors. You got a beat but you can’t use it. Got swagger but I ooze it. Goddamit bitch, I’m too ill. My swagger drip like two fold, I could pull a Miley but I’m too grown”. She raps, period!
Nelz is ill. Point and the period. The melodic thing she does in the beginning is fresh! I actually wished they put her as the opening emcee because she would have set the mood for the track. Mes jumps after Nelz and she is nice. Her vibe reminds me a little of Godessa plus the accent is Capetonian. Patty Monroe also brings a certain level of freshness to the track. She was one of the people who protested that DJ Switch didn’t include a single female rapper on the track. I must say she did a great job.
Rouge is a beast, she rides the beat like a killer. “This ain’t about right and wrong, This ain’t about my gender. Call out the sistas, call out the niggas, I’m swinging like I’m Bruce Jenner”. This is by far my favourite verse on this track. She has a steady flow and the amount of ease she is able to switch flows is admirable.
Cape Town exports, Phresh Clique make an appearance and they are bringing in the realness and funky rhymes. B.K is also quite nice man. The Queen of Motswako, Fifi Cooper just brought the street in this verse and again proving why she deserves the title. I don’t think I’ve ever heard her this cool and refined. All hail Clara T! She sounds seasoned on this track and she has lyrical skill. And the closing emcee is Mabala Noise queen herself, Gigi Lamayne. She probably made the guys wish they had her on the original.
Listening to this joint, it is hard not to compare it to the remixes that have come before it. But there is something special about rappers who happen to be female coming together to jump on a track like this. These ladies are ill and they are proving that you don’t to be a dude or to sell your body to be taken seriously. On this track they brought the real lyricism and that is what real hip hop is about.
