The industry is opening up and presenting us with mostly generic rappers but when fresh and talented stock hits us, they make an impact. Sipho the Gift is one such artist. Born Sipho Languza, the Kimberly-born, Stellenbosch-based young rapper and producer is signed to Immaculate Taste record label.
He describes the music that he makes as “introspective rap with melodic elements that are inspired by other genres”. He states that he pays attention to the art form of rap but also wants the production side of it to be appealing. His production process is quite simple; he explains that he generally starts with the idea of a beat and then gradually adds layers of “instruments and melodies until the only thing that is missing is his voice”.
Sipho’s mentions that his music explores “topics of a young person trying to figure out the world and who they are in it”. He has been making “conscious” music, music that is heavy on lyrical content and mostly reflective and his latest track Asanda is no different. In the song he is commenting on the “blesser” phenomenon that has swept over the country over the past weeks. He explains that the song is about “the forgotten guy in this blesser/blessee conversation” and he was encouraged to put it out to include a different point of view on the topic. The track leans more to trap rap and has a fun and playful beat with a catchy hook. I can definitely see people dancing to this song in clubs.
I asked him who he would like to collaborate with and this is what he wrote: “I would love to collaborate with Sarkodie because I think he’s the best African rapper, Hit boy because he’s my favourite producer, The Hics because they make really good pop music and Ricky Rick, because I really like his last album and how he treats his craft.”
He is currently working on new music since his acclaimed EP, Coming Of Age, dropped last year. He has produced a few songs and has guest appearances on Well$’s project that’s dropping in June. He adds that he is also going to be recording some material at Redbull studios in June. We’ll be looking out for that!
