Based in Jo’burg, originally from Durban Okmalumkoolkat is the voice of Dirty Paraffin – a duo whose boundary-breaking sounds and self-styled videos have positioned the group as one of the most exciting new visual/performance art outfits. By pulling inspiration from local street culture: kwaito, pantsula, hip hop and shaking it up with dubstep, and electro— they caught the attention of the world’s cool hunters and before you could say “boomslang”, bad beats were booming out of a London studio. For those in the know, the LV x Okmalumkoolkat collab is a match made in music heaven. LV’s knack for blending UK bass sounds with South African house, kwaito, and hip-hop came into full effect when Okmalumkoolkat provided vocals on LV’s 2010 banger ‘Boomslang’. Okmalumkoolkat went on to feature heavily on LV’s EP which dropped this July— notably on ‘Zulu Compurar’ and the EP’s lead single, ‘Sebenza’, (be sure to check out the video from director Chris Saunders). The EP was followed by a full-length album (released this August) which saw LV collaborate with two other South African lyricists: Ruffest and Spoek Mathambo.
