On The Rise: AYON The Multidimensional Rapper, Singer, and Songwriter

Ayanda Mfeka, known as AYON, was born on September 5, 2003, in Durban, Kwa-Zulu Natal. She grew up with her mother, grandmother, and late grandfather, who inspired her deeply. Their teachings gave her the passion to become a versatile rapper, singer, and songwriter, blending old school western hip-hop with traditional African elements to create a unique sound.

AYON’s musical journey expanded when she met the Eastbound Fam during her teenage years. This experience allowed her to experiment and develop her own distinct style within the hip-hop community. Eager for growth, AYON found inspiration from the Eastbound Fam’s movement, shaping her musical evolution.

Tribunal music explores African rituals and the challenges faced by individuals through their songs. This theme has greatly influenced AYON’s creative process. Within two years, she auditioned for the Sportscene PUMA OUT ME Competition and made it to the top 30 in Cape Town. During the final appearance as one of the top 30, judge Youngsta CPT told AYON:

“You have talent and the potential to be a star with or without this competition, after this just go back home and release that song and shoot a music video for it and you will see after that’.

In 2017, she released her first single “9/5” and then “WHY YOU HATIN’ ON ME?” in 2018. She followed these with a new version of Flex Rabanyana’s “GOD IS ON DECK.” These songs boosted AYON’s popularity among her peers. In 2020, she released “STAR ON THE MOON,” marking a new phase in her musical journey. This phase was evident in three hit singles: “Incweba,” “Ay’suke,” and “Ingqwelekazi,” which concluded her 2021-2022 collection.

In 2023, AYON kicked off the year triumphantly with her Be4Real 2P EP, featuring trumpet-led sounds that are gaining attention in her growing community. She is also working on a full-length EP called “Skhindi Sabesuthu” and is beginning the next chapter of her musical journey, marking new milestones in her career success.

AYON released her new song “HOW YOU WANT IT?” on February 21, 2024, marking her first musical release for the year.
