Durban’s very own distinctive singer and songwriter, Lia Butler (real name Nombulelo Mzobe), describes herself as an “artist in learning, storyteller in grooming and novelist in training” who is loved & praised for her two bodies of work that were released on SoundCloud titled STE (Smiling Through Everything) which was followed by ISIQEPHU and a handful of covers.
From an experience POV, Lia has already been on tour with the likes of Desire Marea and Izimakade, an artistic voyage that started in the Netherlands, stopped by Germany, and headed to Paris… Lia has also performed in one of Okmalumkoolkat’s events called “Spova Gang” which led to her also sharing a stage with the legendary Madala Kunene.
Her music has already gained recognition from prominent artists in the industry such as the legendary Simphiwe Dana, legendary Thandiswa Mazwai, Sho Madjozi, the mentioned Okmalumkoolkat, Blxckie, The Big Hash, Muzi, Moozlie just to name a few as she’s truly making a name for herself in the industry with her unique approach to sound which has been featured on several national radio stations like YFM and Metro FM.
Lia Butler is what we call a music genius and she calls her sound Neo Zulu which is a combination of Neo Soul, Umbhaqanga, maskandi, R&B, and amahubo
Last year on September 29th, Lia released her long-awaited & critically acclaimed debut single titled ‘UCU’ on digital platforms after only releasing music exclusively on SoundCloud. What’s worth highlighting too is that Lia Butler has creatively worked with amazing photographers and videographers in the industry who have made a name for themselves in their own right such the likes of Thickleeyonce, John Baloyi, Gift Dick Banda, and more.
