Peep the trailer for a new Skin Bleaching documentary titled ‘A Gentle Magic’. The documentary explores the culture of skin lightening and bleaching in South Africa and the African diaspora. We’ve seen the act of skin bleaching become very popular amongst our own public figures, namely Khanyi Mbau and Mshoza, who have not gotten any slack for their supposed ‘self-hate’.

‘A Gentle Magic’ as a documentary explores many aspects of this taboo, by questioning the cause of this act, the societal pressures put on women and some men who do this and the repercussions of all of this. This documentary comes at a crucial time, where masses of black people are now reclaiming their Pan-African identity and fully embracing their beauty and physical features.
Many strides have been made to decolonize black minds and shift notions of beauty but this documentary proves that there is still much to be done.
The documentary is by Filmmaker Lerato Mbangeni, Susie Neilson and co-directed by Tseliso Monaheng. Produced by Graeme Aegerter and features interviews from Miss Millie B of Mail & Guardian, as well as Professor Ncoza Dlova.
