Every year in August tens of thousands of revelers head off to the red dusty plains of Northam in Limpopo for one of South Africa’s biggest and most anticipated music festivals – Oppikoppi – for a weekend of hedonistic escapades to the soundtrack of just about every South African music genre imaginable. And for the fourth year running the Red Bull Studio Live Stage, one of many massive stages at Oppi, will showcase the dopest and wildest local electronica and dance music.
Things kick off on the Studio Live Stage on Thursday the 8th, with the Red Studio Opening Act competition that will see one lucky up-and-coming artist earn the chance to open up the sound system on the day and get the party under way. (for more info check out www.redbullstudios.com/capetown).
Red Bull Music Academy alumni are well-represented this year with 2013 participant Trancemicsoul; deep-house poster boy Jullian Gomes and Cape Town favourite Thibo Tazz, heating up the floor. Some of Friday’s highlights include hip-hop duo Christian Tiger School, the trill sounds of Reason, the mutant kwaito of Dirty Paraffin, eclectic trap / EDM mashup of Das Kapital and mosh-pit dubstep and drum ‘n bass of Grimehouse with international act, New York-born Drop The Lime.
Having started the pioneering powerhouse label, Trouble & Bass, the audience is guaranteed a set that combines frenetic energy with impeccable taste, pretty much the key ingredients to a party-starting, dust-kicking set from Drop the Lime. Red Bull Studio Cape Town friend and collaborator OKZharp, one third of UK Hyperdub act, LV, will be taking the stage from daytime revelry to evening madness with his signature leftfield UK bass meets kwaito sound. The night then flows into throw-down mayhem served up by dance-floor anthem duo Pascall and Pearce.
International D-Nox, whose career is now entering its thirteenth year, hits the stage well into the late hours of Saturday evening. Having become an internationally renowned performer, the style of his DJ sets exhibits a wide spectrum of dance sensibility; from progressive through to tech house.
The Red Bull Studio Live Stage has by now become an Oppikoppi institution and favourite for many festival goers, guaranteed to keep the masses enthused and energized from early afternoon to early morning for three days straight. With just under a month to go, we’ll see you in the dust.
