Rapper, Rouge, took the award for Best Female Artist at the South African Hip Hop Awards held this week at the Gold Reef City, Lyric Theatre. This was in recognition of her critically acclaimed debut album “The New Era Sessions” which was released in September this year.
“I am grateful to have won the Best Female category at an award ceremony created to celebrate the best hip hop entertainers in the country. I am privileged to have had the opportunity to share my music with so many people this year and I want to send a heartfelt thank you to everyone who voted for me, without you this would have not been possible,”
She was nominated alongside Patty Monroe, Nelz, Lee STK & MegMafia, and was also nominated in the Best Freshman of the Year category alongside the likes of Shane Eagle, Bigstar, J Molly and Zoocci Coke Dope.
“It is encouraging to see so many people reacting positively to what I have to say – my lyrics -as opposed to the usual focus on my physical appearance. I feel very strongly about the empowerment of female hip-hop artists and the recognition of their artistry, rather than that tired and dated approach of valuing them mostly for their looks. I wanted this album to usher in a new era of hip-hop in South Africa, breaking boundaries around how it should sound – and in doing so, reaching as many people as possible. I believe that this award demonstrates that my goal is achievable.”
