Good news for young rapper Shane Eagle, he shared the news of his album being streamed over a million times with his Twitter followers. Shane Eagle rose to fame and stardom after his successful run on the first season of The Hustle and has since made his mark in the industry with his sharp rhymes and unforgiving metaphors.
‘Yellow’ was released in August, regardless of Shane not having a distribution deal. The album is independently distributed, and we are sure that Shane and his team can be very pleased with the results of their bravery. The album is rumoured to have also gone gold physically too. Shane Eagle thanked his fans on Twitter adding that “Dis is insane, THANK YOU”.

This leads us to question the role and position of big record companies in 2017. What role do Record Companies play in an industry that seems to have mastered the art of ‘Do It Yourself’? The sign of the times points to independence from an institution based on control and measures around managing and selling and artists work. This is more evident in S.A as we’ve seen acts like Cassper Nyovest successfully reaching gold status without the backing of a major record label deal and more recently AKA parting ways with his record label of over 7 years to start his own stable and company. The likes of Riky Rick have joined in too. It is no secret that some record labels in the SA industry have suffered a painful death over the past several years. Many artists have decided to take the independent route and push their own agenda and play by their own rules.
