In association with Concerts SA, award-winning soul and jazz vocalist Dumza Maswana is taking his music to the Eastern Cape this April on the Isixhosa Acoustic Tour and it kicks off today.
The Eastern Cape-born independent artist will be visiting five towns to perform for audiences in an intimate setup, accompanied by double bassist Thembinkosi Mavimbela and Port Elizabeth guitarist Bongani Tulwana.
Dumza is a singer songwriter therefore all his music is self-composed and his music fuses jazz, traditional and soul influences and sounds. He writes about his life experiences and views as well as various things that inspire and motivate him. Dumza is deeply rooted in his culture and religion so his music does display his powerful sense of tradition and religious beliefs.
The Isixhosa Acoustic Tour was inspired by a moment the artist never expected, at the RiveSong Arts Festival held in Hamburg in December 2017. Maswana sent Rwandan-US artist Somi off in an impromptu rendition of his song Ubizo, was then joined by the guitarist and the bassist, and together created a magical moment that sparked his idea of an acoustic tour for his people in intimate spaces of small towns.
His debut album, Molo, was nominated fr a whooping 4 awards at the First Annual Mzantsi Jazz Awards in 2017 and he walked away with the award for song of the year for The Letter.
