They came, they saw – and they rocked Jo’burg! International star Talib Kweli joined forces with legends Black Coffee, Ralf Gum and rapper AKA to blow the roof off the Nasrec Expo Centre on 3 October, as part of the Stimorol #SeeWhatUnfoldsMusicExperience.
If there is one thing I like about Talib is that unlike many other international rappers that come to visit our beautiful country he is actually well informed about the ins and out of South Africa he is even well aware of the current beef in the local hip hop game between AKA and Cassper, if you follow zkhiphani then you would know that we recently published an article of Kweli and Cassper riding around together in Soweto. Kweli even performed a remix of Cassper’s hit song “doc shebeleza” and gave a shout out to AKA as well who performed at the event before Kweli got on stage, He advised both rappers to squash the beef and work together in order to help grow South African hip hop, Talib also sent a shout out to rapper/businessman Tumi from the V and he also said that he just recorded a song with Maftown motswako legend HHP.
This exclusive event – so exclusive that tickets weren’t even on sale and had to be won via SMS entry – was part of a celebration of the launch of Stimorol’s limited-edition Berry Party gum. Also up for grabs were instant prizes such as Vans sneakers, designer sunglasses, Beats by Dr Dre, Berry Party bags, iPad Nanos, airtime and iTunes vouchers.
Headliner Talib Kweli is recognized as one of the most lyrically-gifted, socially aware and politically insightful rappers of the last 2 decades. The Prisoner of Consciousness star has used his fame to spread both his killer beats and political activism on his travels.
Kweli’s thought-provoking music is associated with positivity, spirituality, intelligence and provokes thought and discussion – and he puts on a mean show, too. He’s worked with everyone who’s anyone – and tracks off his latest album see him collaborate with Symbolyc One, Miguel, Abby Dobson and Nelly.
Tickets for the Stimorol #SeeWhatUnfolds Music Experience were in massive demand – over 15 755 SMS’s were received as fans clamoured for both tickets and the amazing prizes on offer. Stimorol Berry Party gum sold in unprecedented quantities with over 72 661 fans taking advantage of the limited-edition flavour. “Stimorol fans are music fans – and they know what they like,” says Sifiso Nkosi, assistant brand manager of Stimorol Gum at Mondelez SA. “The Stimorol #SeeWhatUnfoldsMusic Experience gave them the chance to celebrate their spontenaiety – and have one of the biggest parties Jozi has ever seen!”
