Today on Throwback Thursday we are taking a look at an eclectic and beautiful collaboration between Thandiswa Mazwai and the 340ml band who all teamed up on a record titled ‘Make It Happen’.
Mozambican-born and now Johannesburg-based band 340ml is a multifaceted band exploring the various soundscapes of Africa. Paulo Jorge Chibanga, Rui Soeiro, Pedro Pinto, and Tiago Correia-Paulo who make up the band came together through the love for music. But they all are part of different working sections professionally.
The band incorporates many different elements into their music including dub, jazz, ska, Afro-jazz, Marrabenta, and reggae. All these elements can be picked up in the focus of today’s throwback. So today we will take a look at the original release alongside the remixes it has inspired.
340ml – Make it happen (feat. Thandiswa Mazwai)
Make It Happen is a Jazz-influenced and folkloric record that Thandiswa Mazwai’s eccentric vocals are embedded in. The record is heavily inspired the contemporary soundtrack of yesteryear, however, it received a modern makeover.
The song has a remix for the past three decades. Essentially leaving a fingerprint for that decade.
DJ Kent remix
DJ kent is one of South Africa’s most revered house DJ/Producer and at a time was one of the greatest remixes. And this remix is a snapshot of the popular sound of house music in the early to mid 2010s. When Afro-house was finding its footing in the world stage. Back to when house music did not have many boxes.
Kota Embassy Yano Remix
This remix is a clear representation of the new generation of house music producers who have carved a new path in the house music scene. An Amapiano retake on the song is a snapshot of the song that is currently the apex of house music in South Africa today.
