South Africa Is Putting Their Best Foot Forward At Afropunk Brooklyn This Year

Afropunk Brooklyn has released their 2019 line-up and we are proud to announce that SA has world class representation. Thandiswa Mazwai, Muzi, DJ Doo Wop, DJ Kenzhero, Rude Boyz and BCUC will be joining headliners such as the legendary Jill Scott, FKA Twigs and Kamasi Washington.

What is exciting about the South African acts is that they are diverse in terms of sound and market as well as seniority in the music industry.

Thandiswa Mazawai is world renowned and she honestly is no stranger to performing on stages worldwide. With the recent performance being in New York with Jazz pianist Nduduzo Makhathini performing at Salon Africana. She has also had a few appearances on the Afropunk Jozi stages before being invited to the main festival in Brooklyn, New York.

DJ Kenzhero is another seasoned act who will bring his deep knowledge and understanding of music to the festival. He is known as one of the pioneers of South African Hip Hop and honestly, his knack for combining Hip Hop, Soul, Funk and Jazz is unmatched.

Muzi and DJ DooWop are taking zeal and an alternative sound to the festival as he youngest of the batch. Known for their hypnotic sets and ability to take electronic bass music to a whole new level by adding elements of Kwaito music is quite impressive. Rude Boyz, are also quite impressive. The duo is one of the front runners of the Gqom sound having produced Gqi and Midnight Starring are will also be playing a set.

Laslty, lesser known but equally talented and fiery band, Bantu Continua Uhuru Consciousness (BCUC) are bringing with them pure passion and what they call “indigenous funky soul”. This should be interesting.
