After taking a break from the entertainment industry in 2014 to stabilize her PR business, Thandy Matlaila is back on TV screens in February as a lead on SABC1 Sitcom “Ithuba Lokugcina” which will debut on 11th February 2015 on SABC1. A group of underachieving misfits come together to save their futures, save face and save telling their parents that they’ve again failed. As a heroic/foolish Professor thinks he can save them all and turn them into the brains they wish they had. The Professor sets up a programme that will help the underachieving students get through their academic year successfully. (Therefore Ithuba Lamagcina a “lifeskills/ Extra class” programme within the varsity that the students are attending. The students are all studying various courses, but all come together in this one class as part of their extra class requirement to assist them from failing the academic year again)
Thandy takes up the role of Mpumi who is 24 years of age and is an above average student but lazy. She studies Anthropology, specializing in gender studies. She is a feminist who dislikes men, especially her father; she’s combative and always questions things politically. She’s stern and as tough as teak. Intelligent, well read, conscious, serious, stubborn and vengeful. The sitcom features Thuli Thabethe (City Ses’La) and Zola Nombona.
