The Comic’s Choice Awards rocked the Teatro at MonteCasino earlier this week with the largest gathering of the comedy industry under one roof . The show included appearances by Casper De Vries, Dave Levinsohn, Mark Banks, Robert Whitehead and fast-rising star, Mpho Popps Modikwane, as well as a naked man playing piano on stage. The audience was also treated to performances by the Johannesburg Youth Ballet, and The IsiPhephelo Community Choir who blushed through the cheeky closing song with grace
The show itself was unique, with no speeches allowed, only short comedy sets by each winner. Winners each received a magnificent Waldo statuette designed by Chris Winspear created in pure Bronze. Comic of the Year and Lifetime Achiever recipients each received the most coveted CCA “Charles” rings designed by the Orpheo Twins of Hyde Park. Co-Director, John Vlismas was overjoyed with the response from the audience and support from all the comics. “If there is one thing we do well and need to do well its laugh at ourselves”. “Today the whole industry has the opportunity to laugh together.” All of South Africa’s top reporters, lifestyle shows and TV shows came out to cover the awards with the “Savanna Celebrity Carpet” filled with the who’s who of the Comic industry, celebs and wannabees all dressed up to the nines . The after party was the place to be with invited guests partying to Kaya FM DJs who added to the festive atmosphere at Parker’s Comedy & Jive where the comedians mixed with the media and industry captains, convincing them to get behind comedy and spend some money on comedy events.
