When Tom Solomon (Jason Segel) proposes to his girlfriend Violet Barnes (Emily Blunt), she is thrilled and accepts immediately. Excitedly the pair sets about preparing a wedding. However, fate intervenes when Violet is accepted for a 2-year teaching position at the University of Michigan that she never thought she’d get. Understanding her need to follow her dream, Tom decides to support her and move with her to Michigan and to plan their wedding over the course of the two-year stint. However, the delay does not go down well with family members who are pressuring the couple to wed, and when a further delay appears on the horizon Tom and Violet have to decide whether they are really meant to get married at all.
