Mzansi has her own artistic beat, an unmistakeable authenticity. You know it, when you taste it, it’s a creative soul unlike anything imported to our shores. It’s time all of that found a platform for expression and you won’t have to wait much longer. The PowerPlay Griffin Sessions are set to catapult the culturally aware and the creatively astute right into the heart of a collaboration heretofore unseen – a 48-hour street culture experience, fuelled by PowerPlay.
This event will showcase the talents of the PowerPlay Heroes – seven creative mavericks and leaders in their respective fields – alongside their peers. They all share the same philosophy: play outside the ordinary. Kicking off on 30 June, the PowerPlay Griffin Sessions will fuse the creative disciplines of design, fashion, street art, photography and music into a 48-hour showcase. The Bus Factory in Newtown will be transformed into the PowerPlay Heroes’ playground, one in which future heroes and fans of unique creativity alike are welcome to revel and seek original inspiration. With the promise of exhibitions of art, photography and fashion, as well a series of exciting workshops, all topped-off with styling performances from SA’s top musicians and artists, the stage is set for a party of epic proportions. Those not willing to watch the explosion of originality from the sidelines will be able to get their hands dirty and the creative juices flowing.
Workshops will include Sneaker Customizing and T-shirt Silk Screening with Mandisi; Vinyl Toy Customizing with Kronk; Graffiti with Gogga; a charity drive with 1808; and Tattoo 101 with Tattoolya. All that creative expression can be followed with some serious tekkie-busting on Saturday with beats provided by Teargas, Kabelo, DJ Zinhle, Lulo Café, DJ Dimplez, Moflava, Siz and DJ Raiko or on Sunday with performances by AKA, Mi Casa, 340 ml, The Fridge, Music At Last, DJ P Kuttah, Wireless G, DJ ID (Akio) and DJ Kenzhero. In the lead up to the PowerPlay Griffin Sessions, the PowerPlay Heroes will be on the lookout for the next up-and-coming South African photographers and fashion designers who best capture the PowerPlay brand philosophy through the camera lens or with their styling threads. Four winning photographers will be featured at the PowerPlay Griffin Sessions alongside talented photographer Max Mogale, while four talented fashion designers will share the catwalk with fashion mogul, Head Honcho.
