Larnelle Bakala widely known as Lordnelle is a producer and rapper from Helderberg, a wine-producing area in the Western Cape of South Africa. The area was originally known as the “Hottentots-Holland” area. He was part of Hip Hop collective, UkiyoCPT, consisting of himself and fellow rappers Tembisile and LOOKATUPS.
He has a handful of remarkable songs on his hand- both that he made and produced for others- but the most notable music release he dropped was his 2019 EP TELL A FRIEND. The 5 track EP garnered over 78K plays on Soundcloud, further cementing him as one of the fore voices in the Cape Town New Wave scene. This combined with the global appeal in the approach of the sound explains why it was warmly received- it’s both current and yet manages to represent Lordnelle’s individual style.
Lordnelle is adding diversity to the Cape Town music scene with his unique brand of Trap-influenced music
His latest 3 track offering, Self Love Is The Best Love is a fusion of R&B, Hip Hop and New Wave Sounds. Instead of handling the production all by himself, he enlists Denilson, Eziah and DO2 who help him mould a sound that is both mellow and yearning.
The project sees him step outside of the usual Trap-infused sounds he is used to jumping on. Instead, he plays around with mellow tempos, dreamy vocals as well as appearing more vulnerable in his verses. On 7140 featuring Baksquiat sees him muse over a love that he hopes to rekindle. While listening to this song, I couldn’t help but notice that this is eerily similar to The Big Hash’s newest song Again taken from his album, Hearbreak Hotel.
Jenae’s Interlude sees Lordnelle singing for a lady he is involved with. Although her mother doesn’t like him even though he is a good guy, he can’t imagine life without her. So he’s willing to put all these things aside and try and build a life with her. For Real X2, sees him jump on a more up-tempo beat alongside Ka$h.
Lordnelle is part of the new wave of artists who are adding to the diversity of the face of Cape Town music, period. We are definitely here for his brand of Trap-infused music.
