Since his student days back at the University of Johannesburg, Sakhile Cebekhulu has come a long way to get to where he is now. Not only has he showcased his fashion works of art on the runway but has also established a successful contemporary fashion brand, Sash.

Cebekhulu, who considers himself a mixed media artist as well as a fashion designer gravitates more towards his role as a storyteller.

“To me fashion is an avenue for me to tell authentic South African and African stories.”

Cebekhulu’s design aesthetic and style is deeply rooted within his culturally rich background of which also borrows from the Johannesburg street style scene. His appreciation for telling unique South African stories reflects a deep sense of passion for his craft as an artist, especially as a fashion designer.

“My love for fashion began when I was in high school. It grew out of my love of art. I studied fashion Design at the university of Johannesburg. After three years of studying fashion, I got sick of it and decided to pursue my visual art practice. But after many sleepless nights thinking about making clothing again, I decided to go back into fashion.”
