Top 3 Underground Artists Of The Week

Guys, we are still on that steeze of giving recognition to talented up and coming artists who we believe are super close to breaking into the mainstream. The industry desperately needs an injection of freshness after all. Take a look at who we found this week!

Wendigo Alojam

Desmond Mongezi Majola better known as Wendigo was born 23 years ago and raised in the streets of Vaal Triangle. He grew up around talented rappers and producers such as Golden Shovel of Optical Illusion, Nature Soul, XRate and many more Vaal Triangle emcees who helped him develop his passion for rap and hip hop.

He only started building his own art of sample bending on beats and lyrical skill in 2007, when he was 14 years old and became Golden Shovel’s hype man 3 years later.

Wendigo went to NWU in 2011 where he met talented beat maker and fellow emcee Chabi Mas. The rapper managed to finish his degree and holds a BSc in IT. What I say about these rappers and degrees though? Wendigo and Chabi Mas went on to form Manson Fam.

The rapper recently dropped a mixtape titled VividVision Mixtape and it consists of 16 tracks. The feel of the tape is no doubt 90’s boom bap with hints of soul, funk and trip hop. Plus Wendigo has mastered the art of story telling and of course packs the verses with more than just bars but his own experiences. The mixtape is fresh considering what is out right now. Bring back the real hip hop, please!

Born Thabang L Mathebula, DJThakzin started learning how to make music at the age of 7, when his father taught him how to play the piano. He learnt a lot from his father musically, and this influenced him to learn more about music.

As time went on he started falling in love with house music. “I started deejaying from 2007 till current. In 2011 I gained interest in production, by late 2011 I had taught myself how to produce with my father’s Computer.”

He is currently working with a number of established artists including Lulo Cafe, Busiswa, Baainar Records and Zano.

DjThakzin just released a new single titled Africa featuring Leko M. Taken from the upcoming EP dropping soon. The single is currently doing well, and the masses are also receiving it very well. The EP is titled Open Season with only 4 tracks on it. The artists who are featured on the EP are Leko M, Ray T, Paul B & Theology.

Hoax, whose real name is Giyani Ngcamu, is an aspiring rapper and a third of Arcade Music, along with Vitu and Subs, the in house producer. Remember Arcade Music? Well, the youngin has recently caught a bit of a buzz this year with the three singles he has dropped for his debut project the Mosh EP.

Hoax Mosh EP

The title comes from the sound he and producer Subs have labelled Mosh, which has trap drums and house/kwaito influenced. This bounce, pin points the gap between the two competing markets in South Africa and joins them together.

The production is not the only special part of this young man’s sound, the writing along with the beats create more than just music, but a soundtrack for the youth. Also the dude does his own illustrations and videos. The sound on this is undoubtedly fresh and unique which leads me to believe that Hoax is five-to blowing up.
