They are no doubt the most stand out Gqom/Trap group in the game right now and they have the hits to prove. Witness The Funk are a Durban-based group, consisting of Lindokuhle Gcwensa, Charles Mchunu and Nhlakanipho Shongwe first met at the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal and began their music journey together.
Their sound is a fusion of house music, trap music and hip-hop which we got introduced to on their first offering, Finding Nomusa, which they dropped last year. I have to admit that I still bump Nomusa every now and then. Having worked with the likes of DJ Tira and Duncan Skuva this year alone, the guys decided to drop their much anticipated EP titled Ngwenya Town.
This project is eccentric as it is commercial and it is damn appealing. They describe the EP as ” a concoction of bizarre and mind-fucking twists and turns of the trippy, roller-coaster experience that the trio have survived as they gallivant their gang-affiliated, high-rolling, intoxicated and trippy existence.” Plus the producers on this are buck as hell!
The title song, Ngwenya Town, stays true to their sound but also manages to introduce us to 3 new characters into their imaginative world – uMudli kaCheese, Ncika and Groovy Croc. The track is about a place called Ngwenya Town where they basically turn up everyday. This is the place where all their dreams come true, everything they touch turn to gold and the weather is always amazingly hot. This place is just epic nje! The production on this joint is quite fresh also.
